What do you do if your boss is having a mental breakdown? He's been super depressed lately and taking lots of "mental holidays." He's also asking for extended time off. (He's a lawyer, btw, and I'm his assistant.) Anyone ever experienced this? Any advice? Thanks!

This depends on your relationship with him. If he talks to you on a personal level, try to get him to talk to an experienced mental health professional who can help him with his difficulties.

If it's strictly a boss-employee relationship, you need to stick to your work. You may want to strike up a conversation with one of his colleagues (or his boss, if you know that person) along the lines of "Have you noticed that John seems really down lately? I'm concerned about him." If they've also noticed, then perhaps they'd be willing to talk to him. He may accept advice more readily from one of his peers or his boss if he's closer to those folks.

If nothing else, eventually his absences and depression will begin affecting his work performance and his boss will begin to notice that something isn't right.

If you are kind of close, just say that perhaps he needs a vacation to rejuvenate.
