Haha - yeah, my wife's family has one as well.
When it gets too hot you have to be careful not to get stuck to the thing!
Like you say, they're not the most comfortable of things, then again they are practical (can you imagine how a regular sofa would be in the summer - soaking up all the sweat and so on).
Another thing about Taiwan is that the furniture market isn't really all that developed (although it is catching up) - so lots of people have very similar stuff..... like the leather sofa.
Perhaps like you suggested - a cotton fabric may be the answer. Perhaps if you make some with nice designs you could make some money?
Perhaps you could make something out of bamboo (which you mentioned) as bamboo keeps quite cool, is in-expensive, can be flexible yet strong.
Good luck on your mission to improve the 'sweaty sofa situation' of Taiwan!

First let me answer why...
Humidity and insects are a HUGE problem in Taiwan. A leather sofa is therefore the best way to go. There are other reasons, but those are the most important.
To the issue of comfort...
Many people buy really hard sofas thinking that they must be better quality and last longer. And maybe because they are used to sitting on wooden sofas. OUCH!
I have a leather sofa, but I am a smart shopper. Mine is from Italy and is quite soft compared to most. It is sand colored and does not get hot at all in the summer.

a cover would make sense and sounds very comfortable... especially if it is washable!
i'm not a big fan of leather sofas , but i can see the practicality in them in that they are able to be cleaned a little easier and do not collect dust like a fabric sofa would.

i figure its a mental thing. I think certain furniture designers in Asia have some weird S and M thing going and they like the smell of leather, and enjoy sticking to their designs. Of course you can get the A/C going so you dont stick as much. I would say buying bedsheets and draping them is the best plan to adapt what you have.
The other (majority of) options I have seen are really uncomfortable looking 'royalty' "antique-ish' type things that are really pretentious and look about as comfy as a pole up the posterior. But old people seem to like that here.
I personally don't own a sofa, I just got lots of extra blankets and pillows and a couple of soft foldy chair things that are like mini-mattresses and i laze around on those and on my bed. Bean bags are good things that I should invest in but have yet to actually buy. Of course I dont need to entertain much at my house LOL. If you are lucky enough to have 2 well placed trees at a good size or enterprising enough to drill holes in your walls (with the permission of your landlord) and hang up a hammock, hey go for it!
As one guy said, Taiwan doesn't have a well developed furniture market- its mostly mass produced stuff. They do have nice wood carvings and probably you can find some bamboo stuff if you hunt around a bit. Some old antiques that are amazing can be found in many suprising places. Of course i find antiques horrible and ugly and splintery but thats just me.
There is an IKEA or 3 in Taipei you can check for other furniture options you can google the locations or just check the newspapers they are pretty good about advertising I think. They have yet to try and enter Taichung and central Taiwan, with its 4 million customers waiting for easier access to their furniture... some people I know get their stuff delivered.
