Pi is an irrational number. It is extremely helpful in calculating volumes and surface areas of some solids like cones and cylinders. This is useful in finding out stuff like the area of canvas needed for a conical tent or the amount of liquid that can be filled in a cylindrical or hemispherical vessel. It can also help find area and perimeter of circles and parts of circles like sector, segment and arc

The basic definition of pi is the ratio between the circumference (perimeter) and the diameter of a circle. If the diameter is 1 unit, the circumference is pi units.

The exact value of it can never be found as it is a non - terminating and non - recurring decimal. Here is its value correct to 31 places of decimal:

3.1415926535 8979323846 2643383279 5

We use a symbol because it can not be expressed exactly as a number. It has an infinite number of decimal places. Just so that nobody gets confused we use the Pi symbol.

This number is the ratio between the perimeter of a circle to it's diameter, (Pi=P/D) and we can calculate the perimeter of a circle when we have it's diameter.

There are way too many reasons to mention all of them here, but the two main reasons are:

1. To determine arc distances based on the radius of an arc or circle.

2. To determine the areas of circles based on the radius.
