stay in Athens for 3 days to see the monuments and museums and the historic centre. From athens you can take a day trip to Delphi and Hosios Lukas (major archaeological site, 2 hour drive from Athens, and don't miss the HosiosLukas Byzantine Monastery), or to Nafplio-Mycenae- Epidavros.
It is worth visiting a couple of islands, like Syros(beutiful neoclassical town)-Mykonos(nice beaches, picturesque architecture and a lot of night life), or Naxos(best beaches and monuments)-Santorini (great landscape), or even Sifnos-Milos (calmer, but still picturesque and great beaches). I mention them as couples because that is how they are on the same ferry line. Also Rhodos-Kos are beautiful, but far from Athens, maybe you should consider flying there.
You will spend at least 5 days on the islands, so that leaves us 3-4 more days. I would advise you to go to Ioannina town and the Zagorochoria villages, it is in the Epirus, 5-6 hour drive from Athens, but magnificent, or to thevillages o0f Mount Pelion, or to the Meteora, a wonderful landscape of huge rocks on top of which are old monasteries.
