No one is actually certain of the the cause of handedness. Even with two Lefty parents, a child only has a 26% chance of being a lefty, so it's only partially genetic. Also, injury to the right hand in childhood can force one to be left-handed out of necessity. The most accepted theory though, is the 'Brain hemisphere division of labor" theory. See this links below.

Lefties run in our family too. The middle of my three girls in a leftie, as is my younger sister and my father and his father too. That's all the farther back that I've traced it. All of the lefties are extremely bright and technical. They can do math well, build things and draw. The rest of us are right handed and are "word" people. Lefties seem to be more creative too. I believe that it's something they're born with. I tried to get my daughter to change when she was a toddler, but no go. She could use both hands equally well as a baby and toddler, but went to full-time lefty status at about age three.

Most people left to there own devices would tend to be left handed as it is the right side of the brain that dominates in this area.
But convention dictates that people should be right handed and young children are discouraged from being left handed.

Did you know that left handed people tend to recover from a stroke quicker than right handed.
Because in a stroke it is the left hand side of the brain that sufferes a blood clot

Remember the left brain controlls the right side of the body and visa versa

Some people are just born that way, with the left-hand side of the brain more active than the right. I think.

It's in our makeup when we are conceived. The right side of the brain is dominant so that makes the person left handed.left side brain dominance, which is the usual produces right handed people. Some people have a more balanced or more equally powered brain so that they are ambidextrous.

hormonal changes (due to constant stress/depression or a traumatic event) during pregnancy may lead the fetus to go under similar stress and cause left handedness as a result of chemical imbalance in the brain later. In such circumstances the child also has a higher risk of developing chronic depression later on in life as well.

People don't become left-handed , it decided in the womb, at few weeks, you can see if a baby is left or right handed
