Here's a few sources of information that may help you. It's mostly related to bots and botnets, but the principles and techniques are the same:

If you are very careless and visit any untrusted websites , some cookies and other hackin material will unknowingly get installed in your PC and then Hacker can get your personal info easily. So it is recommended that you only visit good and known websites while you surf and to protect your PC to max. Install 1 good antivirus software ( Mcaffee or Norton ) recommended and a Firewall ( Zonealarm ) recommended.

It is very easy which is why you need a firewall. Windows XP has one but it must be on. If you have doubts if it is or not then go to start. control panel, and then Windows Firewall. Open that to make sure it is set to on.
If you do not have one then go get this one here BUT be sure to read all the instructions. This is free.

Rohan is correct also so get this. It tells you if a site is proved to be unsafe.

if you got a fire wall then no! if you got a router (most routers has a firewall built into it) then no just keep firewall and virus scans up to date!
