Glofish were originally developed to detect pollutants in the water. The idea was that they would develop colour when a certain pollutant was present. At some point, someone decided that it would be profitable to sell fish as pets, that fluoresced all the time.
The fluorescence itself it protuced by a protein gene, which are naturally occurring genes which are derived from marine organisms. The gene was spliced into danios, created danios that look fluorescent, particularly under a blacklight.
The offspring of glofish naturally inherit the "glo" and do not need to be genetically modified individually.
Glofish are not harmed by the fact that they were genetically modified, either. It's dying fish that is a cruel practice.

Genetic material is actually taken from one creature and added to the DNA of the zebra danio before they spawn.

When they spawn, the color of the original creature the DNA was taken from comes out in the babies (fry).

The new "Glofish" will then breed "true" and the color is fixed as a new variety. There are more colors that are now being produced other than the red ones.
