When you are 17 years old, and your parents are okay with it. Can your parents go to jail? I'm going away to college in the fall and I want to live in an off campus apartment (I missed the dorm room sign up) and I was wondering if it was considered illegal to live by myself when I leave to college. Any answers will be accepted.

Living off campus while going to college and 'moving out' are two different things. Many students get housing during the school year, but their 'permanent' address is their parent's house.

Are you on your parent's insurance? If so, and you want to keep it, you probably need to keep you parent's address as you 'permanent' address. Please have them check with their insurance.

As for illegal to move out - if you are a minor and not emancipated - you parents are responsible for your care, but I don't know if any law stating where you have to live.

Of course a 17yr old young adult going to college may be live away from home, it's normal and common. Also in any state that does not recognize 18 as the age of majority nothing stops a person from moving to a state that does. It's very stupid for some states to even try to have a different age because 18yr olds are free to enlist in the military, marry and move where they wish. These states can not enforce any age but 18.

As long as it is with your parents consent.
.
**With exception of four states the legal age of majority is 18, in Alabama and Nebraska it is 19, and in Mississippi and Pennsylvania it is 21. Most states have exceptions to the age laws, such as marriage and enlistment in the military, both of which require the consent of the parent(s) or legal guardian.

no, its not illegal.

my only suggestion is to put your name on a dorm room waiting list. unfortunately, sometimes during the school year people leave. if this is in fact what u want to do.

I moved out of my mom's house when I was 17. She was ok with it and I wasn't even going to college...I was just moving in with my husband(he was only my boyfriend at the time)

So I wouldn't see any problem with it when you are going to college.
