You need to justify why you deserve a pay rise. Examples could be their your work load has increased or that your current salary is below what the market is paying.

a) Before using this option, try to make a different impression for about a week or two by wearing dirty clothes, low cost bags, shoes etc.
Dear Boss,
As you might have noticed me of late, I am getting poorer and downtrodden. So I hereby request you to increase my pay so that I can survive in a better way.

b) Ask some of your friends to frequently call you during work and talk about salary levels in the industry and around your area and abroad. Then,
Dear Boss,

I keep getting calls from various companies regarding better opportunities, but as a loyal employee of this org, I wouldn't want to leave this place. So could you help me come up on the salary part on par with other employers ?

c) Hi, I would like a small rise in my salary as expenses are becoming huge. What do you think ?

d) Try this if you already have other offers and ready to leave the place :
Dear Boss,
Am more competent than my peers in this organisation doing better work with better quality and better turnaround. But nothing is improving on the financial aspect in this organisation. Hence I would like to let you know if you can do anything on this front before I put down my papers.

basically, you have to outline your accomplishments, and worth to the company. Do not go into personal issues, like "need the money" the only thing that is relevant is what you have done for them lately, and what they can expect from you in the future.
