Yes, you can lay it down... we purchased a new one and as long as it sits upright for 24 hours before plugging it in and using it again, it is ok to lay down for transport... you could check with a local appliance dealer (who is knowledgeable) just to double check.... but when we bought ours, the box had the 'instructions' on it... they arent like old fridges anymore... which were not to be layed down
(we have moved ours 2 1/2 hours from our home.. laying down... 6 years after we purchased it new...(which was 10 years ago) and it worked fine ..and is still working fine! just let it sit the 24 hours....

The box on a new refrigerator states(TRANSPORT IN UPRIGHT POSITION). Nowhere on the box does it say if you do, leave it unplugged for 24 hours. Rent a small trailer and leave it standing up. Be sure to secure the freezer door so it dosen't snap off when you go around a corner. If it's a junker, move any way you want.

I'm afraid they're right...your fridge contains a oil for the working but if it is moved in a lying down position the oil could spill out and causing your fridge not to work again. If you noticed when the delivery men brought it...it came in in an upright position.

It would be Better to transport it in an upright position if possible..... a fridge can sit upright in an mpv or a small van so can you organise that?
If not, put it on its side but take it easy on the journey and put it upright as soon as you arrive and leave it for 24 yours before switching it on!

No don't lay it down, a fridge contains gases that will move if you lay it down thus causing it to be unstable.

the problem lies with the compressor. when you lay a fridge on it's side, the oil in the compressor drains out and goes into the tubing. if you turn the unit on before the compressor oil drains back into the compressor, then the compressor will seize up from lack of lubrication. twenty four hours is a good rule of thumb. longer will give you more assurance.

We laid ours down when we moved but it was about 3 miles, 10 minutes away. I wouldn't risk it if you were told it's not safe to do.

it's ok to move it lying down, but you need to leave it sitting upright for at least 24 hours before you switch it on again.
