You used to have to fill out a form with your name and address when you buy a tv, thats how they know!
I don't believe those vans do anything, because then why did I used to get a form once a year saying Why Haven't You Got A TV Licence? There were boxes to tick like 'just moved here', 'just bought the tv'. There wasn't one for Because I Havent Got A Bloody TV.
They have a list of every address in the UK and they know who has a tv license. I guess all those that don't get one of those letters or a visit.
You should bother because the fine is £1,000! Thats crazy.

I'm sure by now they have a computer with everyone's address on it, those addresses that don't have a current licence will most likely be highlighted for an inspector to "pop" round for a chat.
£100 isn't that much to pay to stay safe, when you buy a new tv these days they ask for your address anyway, you could lie but is it worth it, you hear stories about people getting big fines cause they thought they were being clever and not paying.

Yes, you were right to have paid for your licence. You don't want to run the risk of getting caught: you never know when they may be checking people who having paid their licence, somehow they can check through the signal if you have a tv & if you have paid or not. If you were caught, they could enforce you to pay, if it's still unpaid, they could enforce it via court action. That's something you don't want to happen, believe me!

They come round in vans to pick up tv signals and can detect who has a tv and hasn't paid their licence. If you pay by direct debit its only £10 a month, makes it much easier and you don't grudge it as much as paying for it in a oner! I don't see the point in paying for it either but it saves you a fine if you get caught so it's best safe than sorry.

Advantages: It's the law; feel good about contributing to the fabulous BBC; it's good having no adverts on BBC
Disadvantages: Chances are you won't get caught; you have £100+ cash in your pocket each year;
I've also paid for it and wonder if I should have bothered!
Just make sure you never answer the door to anyone you don't know!

because the TV licencing people have a van that picks up signals from a TV and can pinpoint the exact location of someone without a licence to be honest paying for your licence is a better option than being fined 5000 pounds don't you think

yes, they check ALL UK adresses for having a licence, if you don't then they will target the detector vans on that address when in the area, I know the fee is a pain, but better paying the fee than a £1000 fine and still having to pay it

I'm sure they could find out somehow, lord only knows how but I'm sure they have spies. And yes you really should cos £100 odd is nothing compared to £1000 fine
