A cheap sewing machine that handles both denium and perhaps the ability to sew a thin rayon shirt.
You change the needles based on the thickness of the material.
For some denium, I actually got thicker thread - some are sold as thicker carpet thread, and really hold for thick denium.
I got a new sewing machine (and it's enough after I had a big complicated one that worked sometime) that served my purposes.
It's very small and good. It was $19.95 at hsn.com - and I like that it's portable, and still has the electric foot peddle for ease of use, bobbins and small kit with lots of things that you will need. Yes it was $19.95 plus about $5.95 for s/h, and came in about 5 different colors - this time I picked light blue.
GOD bless us always.

I would agree with the second answer. A decent machine that will sew almost anything you just need to make sure that the needles are strong enough for the fabric.
Good luck

denim is a heavier than usual fabric. you need to be sure that the machine can handle the thicknesses you will be sewing. a commercial unit vs a home unit c0omparison will determine whether a good quality home unit is sufficient, which, unless you are doing commercial sewing jobs which require a heavy duty machine due to it's use will tell you all you need. most light duty home units can handle denim, but if you are also wanting to do heavier fabrics, a commercial unit may be needed, but only if you are doing high volume sewing. normal home use will use a standard or light duty machine.
