Very slim. No, probably not, just be careful though.

New Jersey has a bad reputation for shark attacks due to a series of attacks back in 1916. The infamous Matawan Creek incidence is mostle responsible for it. it didn't help that earlier a few attacks occured on the beaches of NJ. Theories flew (and fly) as to whether the attacks were all performed by one animal. it is generally assumed that the animal was a great white, but the fact that the atacks in the creek occured in fresh water suggest that it may have been a bull shark instead.
That said, I agree with all the answers you have received so far. Chances are that you will bite more sharks (i.e., eat shark meat) than the other way around. The likelihood of being attacked by a shark - be it in Jersey or elsewhere - is simply minute. Swim and enjoy the ocean - and be careful of rip tides and undertows. Oh, and if you want to avoid attacks altogether and with 100% certitude, hang out at the local pool.

You should not be afraid of going in the water. I have been to the Jersey shore many times and have only experienced dolphins and jellyfish. I have never seen a shark swimming in the waters, so your chances of getting attacked by a shark at the Jersey shore is slim to none.

There are greater odds that you will drown than be attacked by a shark statistically.
Edit: There are about 50 shark attacks a year I believe hearing or reading somewhere. Divided into 6 billion people...so a slightly lesser chance than 1 in 100,000 odds (if earth only had 5 billion to make the math easier).
No, you should not be afraid to go into the water.

The shark on the Jersey shore has more chance of being bitten by a human than you have of being bitten by a shark.
This is not to say you will not be attacked by a shark, of course. Just to say it is unlikely.
