Membrane sweeping means that while internally examining you, your doctor will simply "sweep" a finger around your cervix. This is to separate the membranes around your baby from your cervix which releases hormones called prostaglandins, which MAY start your labor.

After this is done it is more likely that labor will start within 48 hours. Works better if your cervix is already softening in preperation of labor. It didn't work when I had it done.
It can be uncomfortable, as that area is sensitive and you may have some spotting afterwards and/or irregular contractions.

If they do it right it hurts, plain and simple. The dr will use his/her fingers to separate the amniotic sac from the opening of the cervix. This causes your body to release prostaglandins to hopefully give labour a kick start. You may have bleeding and contractions that diminish and then pick up about 24-48 hours later if it works. Some people go into labour right away.
I had that done with 2 of my children. It hurt yes, but both times I was in labour within 48 hours after and I would choose to do it again.
Here are some links for you, good luck at the appt, and good luck during your delivery!!!!

The doctor will insert a finger into your cervix. This is far from comfortable. They are trying to get labor started by messing with the bag of waters. The idea is that touching the membranes will weaken them and allow the water to break putting you in active labor.

The procedure should be quick. It didn't help me, but maybe it will help you.
