Hello, I've just bought a 9800 Pro and would like some advice on heat issues. Overheating seems to be a common problem with this card, and I wondered if anyone out there knows if this is relative to the GPU, the VRAM or both?

I am going to get some RAM sinks so this should help the memory stay cooler.

Also is the stock HSF ok or not? I don't intend overclocking the card at all.

Thanks in advance

usually it's ambient heat mixed with the GPU getting too hot, if this card is prone to that, it's because it's got a crappy HSF combo...there are a few ways to fix this problem, the most cost effective is, make sure your case has a wind tunnel type cooling effect (i.e. a cool air intake at the bottom front, and a hot air outtake at the top rear, heat rises).
Replace the OEM HSF combo...that's the most cost effective, the best is water cooling, replace the OEM HSF with a copper water cooler that's designed for your card.
RAM heat sinks aren't a bad idea, but don't spend too much money there...focus on the HSF.

Just get a pc exhaust fan there about a £5er a locate it next to card to extract the heat... or do as above and locate high in the case to extract the hot air rising

if you're not going to overclock you'll be fine as long as it doesn't gain a lot of dust and is in a seriously crowded area that doesn't allow heat to escape
