Ethernet has evolved to mean a set of protocols that implement CSMA/CD.

CSMA/CD is Carrier Sense Multiple Access(?)/Carrier Detection. Basically your computer starts talking, and listens to itself. If what it hears is garbled, then it knows someone else started talking while it was. At that point it waits a random time and tries again. The Carrier Detection means that it listens before it tries to talk to try and only talk in quiet periods.

It's what gives you Internet, either through an Ethernet cable, or through a wireless router and modem for a wireless Ethernet connection for computers with wireless internet capability.

Ethernet adapters are connected with category 5 cables and rj-45 connectors (8 conductor modular connectors). A quick google search or a more specific question may yeild better results.

however, it's not limited to 10Mb/s...cat6 can go up to 100Gb/s with the proper network hardware, or 1Gb/s with a Gigabit ethernet card, and a gigabit router.
