Is it illegal? Is it safe?

The car seat and stroller were given to me so that's why I wondered if they all just come with a base or not? This car seat is one that fits right into the stroller and my friend did not give me a base. I haven't been able to contact her lately to ask her.. Thanks for your answers so far.

This depends on which type of carseat it is. Some carseats (like the Graco Snugride) do not need to have a base (but typically come with one), while others absolutely positively have the base.

If the seat is allowed to be installed without the base, it is perfectly legal and safe, assuming you get the seat installed right. This is where you might want to contact the manufacturer and get a replacement manual (they might also have bases for sale) and contact your local safe kids to find a child passenger safety technician. Try safekids.org to find one.

It is also very important that you check the date on this carseat your friend gave you - car seats expire after about 6 years. Additionally, ask your friend if it has been in an accident - if it has, it must be destroyed.

This is how I see it.. if it comes with a base then it is meant to have it locked in the car. The base is flat on the bottom and wider than the actual seat itself so therefore making it fit better in the car. The bottom of the car seat is usually rounded and to me that would make it easier to slip through the seat belt if (God Forbid) an accident occurred. Now this is only my opinion. To get the safety facts call the manufacturer and hear it from them. Also you can go to any Fire Dept or police station and they can show you how to correctly install the car seat in your car and tell you if you should use the base as well. Good luck.

No you do not have to use the base. The base is there for "convenience" mostly. I generally feel I get the car seat in batter without the silly thing AND it sits at a better angle.

it's no illegal, because some car seats are made to be without a base, but if it is made for a base then it is best to buy one and use it.

Read the manufacturers instructions, that is the only way to know how the seat was intended to be used...If a car seat is not in place properly, you might not bother to even have one..It is very unsafe...

Lil' Mam is correct. I had the base and my husband didn't and he used the seat belt. It even should show how to install it with the seat belt on the side or manual.

having a base doesn't mean you have to use it. if you notice the infant car seats all have little slots to run a lap belt through. you have two choices. it's not required, its just more easy to take baby in and out of the car.

If the seat comes with a base, you must use it.

That is part of the harness system for the baby's safety.

Contact your local police department. I know that here in KS, the police will set up a 30 minute, FREE appointment and go over in detail how to set up your baby carseat.

It can get pretty complicated. They put towels and swimming noodles under my baby's base when showing me.

It is safe and legal. You don't have to have a base. I find that I can get my seat in tighter with the seatbelt. Just make sure that you truly tighten all the slack and you have no forward or side to side movement.
