I don't really like the idea of having a computer by my television (because there's no room for it). But I'd like a PVR if it would allow an external hard drive to connect to it. What do you think is best? Currently I am using crappy VHS until December at the earliest.

Do you get off-the-air, cable, or staellite?
HD or SD?
With satellite or digital cable you have no options, you can't use a PC. (Digital cable card tuners exist, but only for Vista PCs). But PCs work OK with analog cable or off-the-air.

HP (and others) make digital entertainment centers with PVR functionality, HD tuners, etc., but they are not cheap..

If you get a PVR, make sure it has a TV guide, otherwise it is rather painful to use.

in terms of constructive factors particular. A MPC can show pictures, play music, checklist television, and do each little thing a classic laptop can. in terms of ease of use surprisingly in the portion of television recording, a PVR is plenty better surprisingly a product like Sky+. Its a one function gadget so the complexity is decreased. No configuration, works out of the field, fool evidence application with all constructive factors usable from a distant, greater reliability. additionally, as far as i be attentive to, you cant get a digital tuner card for the laptop that helps top type channels and twin tuners.
