First I suggest you run a spyware checking program such as Adaware, to see if you have any spyware which might be sucking up some of your bandwidth. Also, if you have a wirless router, you may have people nearby tapping into your router. Perhaps try using a MAC filter on your wireless router if you have one.

I have the same problem on Verizon ADSL in Philadelphia. Two or three times a DAY my download speed drops to ZERO. I am not sure why this is, but I am sure it is on their end and not mine. Before I moved here I had a fiber optic connection (Verizon FIOS) with the same hardware connected, except the DSL modem/Router combination they gave me and it never happened. As a guess? Possibly they have to switch the traffic sometimes and the dropoff is when the equipment has to reestablish the connection? Mine is almost 100% predictably two minutes from dropout to reconnect every time.

no! what it is you got a lan and are they acessing the internet at the same time? lets say you are downloading something on pc 1 and you get on and download something on pc2 at the same time you notice pc1 download speed slows down because you have reached the maximum speed the isp is allowing to come into your pc! the router is splitting the speed in half so the two computers will share the connection!!
