Towelling shaped nappies such as Mother-Ease are the best, because they can be adjusted to fit all the way from newborn to potty-trained.
All you need to buy in addition are the waterproof nappy outers, which come in different sizes. Oh, and disposable tissue-type liners, which generally come on a roll (available in many supermarkets as well as online and by mail order).

Though the initial cost looks high, they last wonderfully. I used the set I bought for both my kids, and then sold them on ebay (where there's a thriving market for second-hand washables).

Whichever brand you end up with, do check with your local council: many offer grants towards the purchase of washable nappies.

I searched the net for hours and hours and finally settled on a company called...tots bots, their nappies are excellent and you can even phone them to discuss any issues you may have. I bought a bag of 15 nappies and 5 liners and the waterproof wraps for around £140. They do them in sizes from birth to 6 months and then theres size 2 which is 6 months and over.
They wash very well, dry very quickly...and the best bit is that they resale very well and hold a good price too.

I use the cotton Bottoms now Tommee Tippee brand and find them brilliant, they are shaped and require minimal folding.
They are a pretty low maintenance nappy too and are easy to deal with and use on a daily basis.
