Limewire itself isn't illegal. It's when you download music without paying for it that it becomes illegal.

The music you try to share has a copyright on it. Which means the artists get paid per "performance" or sale of the cd or song. By sharing it on limewire you are illegally distributing the artists material for free.
That is why the RIAA - who governs copyrights and royalties for the artists are now coming down on companies and users of limewire and other sharing services. They are starting with the largest offenders and then working down to the smaller offenders and fining them for what they have done. Limewire knows where the songs were shared from by your IP address, and when the RIAA legally asks for the info they have to give it to them - which pins down the actual computer and individual who uploaded or shared the songs - they then fine them based on how many songs and how many times they were shared.
All users will be caught eventually.
Just respect the artists and buy the material yourself - if you do not the artists will not get paid anything and music will suffer and slowly cease to exist.

Most of the files on Limewire are copyrighted material that you should be paying for and it's considered stealing (pirating) when you download it. The actual Limewire program itself isn't illegal, it's what most people do with it.

Limewire is not illegal. You can use it to download non-copyrighted work like new bands trying to get recognition or music that is in the public domain such as classical music.

Only downloading copyrighted material is illegal.

ATHENS, Ohio - The music industry is asking 50 Ohio University students to pay $3,000 each to avoid lawsuits accusing them of pirating songs off the Internet.

A letter to one Ohio University student told her that she distributed 787 audio files, putting her total minimum potential liability at more than $590,000. The minimum damages under the law is $750 for each copyright recording that had been shared, the letter said.

because you are downloading programs, songs, and movies on it without paying a dime... ur file sharing and that illegal, hence why napster was shut down... the only reason why its still up is because they found a loop hole and they offer a better version but you have to pay

because you're stealing music from hardworking artists. They pour their blood, sweat, tears, and emotion into their music and people just take it. You do realize that famous or not, their music is their career and this is how they make money. I know they have plenty of money, but its still not right. Its more than money, though real fans don't steal music.
