I agree. I think equal rights are all very well but I dont think it applys in all circumstances.

For example a friend of mine is a firefighter and has a woman firefighter on his watch. If I was trapped in an upper floor of a burning building I certainly know who I would rather see climbing up a ladder to save me and it wouldn't be a woman. I couldn't see a 15stone man being too comfortable with that situation either.

Don't get me wrong there are things women can do just as well as men and should be paid accordingly if they can, without special treatment.

However I don't believe true equality would work.

Because when people talk about their "rights" they rarely think about the responsibilities that make those rights possible.

This a large part of the reason that the "Equal Rights Amendment" failed as miserably as it did (Back in the 1970's...)

Granting absolute "equal" rights to women would require us to train women as front-line soldiers.

Things that some women take for granted, like being able to "flirt" their way out of traffic tickets, would suddenly be grounds for discrimination lawsuits by Men who could not get similar treatment.

Maternity leave for women only would be a problem... We'd need to offer paid "paternity" leave as well.

I'm not saying equal rights isn't an admirable goal. Its just that we don't know what we are asking for when we talk about it, that's all....
