No. All the classic cars are classics. Using the name of a classic to promote new design, technology and style is a marketing ploy. Looking back to when Twiggi first stepped out of one in the 60’s they have always been in a class of their own. The new one is too big and far too expensive to appeal to real Mini fans.

Drivers of the 'New Mini' will never know the joys of the front-end fitted coil, the pleasure of fitting new bushes in the top engine mounting bracket and the absolute ecstasy of loosing the distributor vacuum tube whilst filling the SU Carburettor with 3-in-1 Oil.

It is not better from a conceptual point of view, the original wins that hands down because it was the first and set new trends in manufacturing that are the basis for most small cars today. In the quality and performance stakes the new mini is far better but purists who love the old Mini Cooper might well disagree.

They will never beat the original! The point of mini is that it is small. In 50 years time the original mini will still be a famous classic. The BMW version will be forgotten like the Talbot Sunbeam.

Yes it is better than the original. That was clever because of lack of money they made it up out of cars that were already being produced. The suspension was entirely original but they did suffer from numerous problems .I worked in a main Austin dealership and can well remember the older mechanics saying it will never catch on they were wrong despite its faults it was a joy to drive the handling was superb if only they had more money and resources they would still be in business today Mick UK

do you mean 'better' ?

it's not as small, but of course BMW wanted a larger car so it would sell better in the US, as well as meeting EU safety requirements, plus being able to include airbags, impact bars...air con, al those modern necessities...

I'd say maybe they are both products of their times, and the market ...

If you want improved safety for your passengers, more room, BMW engineering and quality, luxuries like SatNAV, air-con, electric windows, then perhaps it is better (or should that be 'beta' ?).

Now, if you want cool, then it's a matter of personal taste, for me the Italian Jobs mini's will always be cooler !

Hope that helps
