I think that you should give ballet a try, it is a beautiful dance.
BUT, you need to start taking ballet classes. Start in a beginners class and work up from there. When you start you will wear ballet slippers, made from leather or canvas. Here is a picture of them:
http://www.discountdance.com/frame_set.php3?mf=/dancewear/page_SHOE_p1.html
ALL ballet dancers begin in ballet slippers until they are ready to begin pointe work. This could take several years of training, depending on your dance experience, talent, strength, flexibility and technique. Only your ballet teacher can tell you if you are ready for pointe shoes.
THEN, when you are truly ready to begin pointe work, you must go to a dance shop and have your shoes fitted from a professional. Pointe shoes are actually difficult to fit to each individuals feet. There are many companies and each company has several styles of shoes....ALL are made different. This is so that each dancer can find the shoe that fits her individual foot the best. When you go in for a fitting you will try on many different shoes, you'll have to find a shoe that fits the length of your toes, the width at the base of your metatarsals, the strength of your arch, and the shape of your heel. You CANNOT just give someone your shoe size and find a pointe shoe that fits.
I hope that this explains how you will need to begin ballet in ballet slippers, not pointe shoes.

You must not get point shoes before you have normal ballet lessons. Your ankles will not be strong enough, and you need to be trained before you can do it.
I have done ballet for about a year now, i have taken 2 exams (which is very good in that time) and i still am not ready for point work yet. I do demi-point work, which means half point work,
To get your feet fitted-ballet shoes are usually a higher size than your normal shoe size. Research it on the internet, or ask when you buy them.

Good for you for wanting to try ballet, I was a ballet dancer for 13 years, and I used point shoes for around 8 of those years...
First of all, yes there are many distributors worldwide of ballet shoes; the brand depends more on your flexibility and point, and the size is different with each brand. Secondly, you should get ballet classes BEFORE you buy the shoes and get the teacher to help you find out which one is the best fit for you, ask her/him to go with you to a local shop for fittings if you're gonna buy them in person, if you're going to order them through a catalog or the internet ask her/his help... Good Luck with that, and hope you like... I know I loved it!!!!

If you go to a dance shoe store, they can help you size your feet for ballet flats, but don't get pointe shoes. You could break your ankle, or ruin your foot and never be able to dance again. If you really want to wear pointe shoes, take ballet classes and talk to the teacher of the class.

I agree with atomic, it really looks like you are getting pointe shoes for the look and to try and experiment. The problem is there is a technique to pointe. Without proper train you can really do some damage to your feet ALL THE WAY TO your back! It is not really to be played with. If you seriously want to try pointe out go to a class(and you can really only find it in series so you can't just take one class) and get all the info and technique from an experienced pointe teacher. This teacher will be able to help you with sizing and find the perfect shoe for your foot.

You are not a ballet trained dancer, don't get pointe shoe.If you want to do ballet , just get a leather shoe first. The ballet shop will help you to size your feet.

NO!! that will be the biggest mistake ever. you cant get pointe shoes until you have taken ballet. your dance teacher will tell you when you are ready fro pointe. plus you cant buy pointe shoes by yourself. they have to be perfectly fitted and approved. plus, you have to get the correct toe pads. dotn do it until you are supposed too.
