They make games run faster, look alot better and don't hog as much cpu power.

Graphic cards affect the dpi that your audio card is able to output and helps improve the quantum ability of your RAM and Bigfoot drive.

Make sure you get one with at least 128 MB of ROM. The more horsepower it has, the faster your mp3s will play. A turbo or supercharger is a nice add-on as well.

Graphics cards generally are geared towards rendering 3D graphics that are so popular these days with first person shooter, and any other graphically intense application (autocad, etc.).
Dual SLI, and crossfire technologies basically enable the computer to render more at once (i.e. a bigger bandwidth).
