Have found out that an ex collegue ( not a nasty character but very selfish, moany and snappy) has gone skiiing and broken his leg. Many have laughed at his misfortune but I don't find it funny at all as his injury might cause all sorts of probs on the long run.Do other people lack empathy?

The pain of breaking a leg must be excrutiating- is that funny?

My reaction would depend on how the injured described the injury and how they took it. If they are light hearted about it and making fun of themselves or embaressed that they were that clumbsy then laugh away because you don't want to bring them down if they are in a good mood about it. If they are really upset and stressed because of the financial and medical reasons they it is not really ok to laugh at him, and being empathetic is probably the right move.

Yup, 99% of the human race has that little nasty streak which laughs at others misfortune.

You must be in the 1% so you are a very rare person.

I would have peed my pants laughing. I'm a bad person!

Keep on showing compassion! You are a nice person. Don't let the cold hearted ones take that away from you. I don't find anything at all funny in someone else's misfortunes! Just keep on being yourself. Maybe your kindness will help this other student to have a better outlook in life.

I think most people just dont care as long its not them. I think its great that you didn't see the humor in it but sometimes its a natural response. You know you see someone walking and they trip and take down three tables with them somehow, you laugh out loud and then run to help and feel bad for laugh but as long as you do something postive about it in the end your not really a bad person.

You have what I suspect is a disappearing virtue. Empathy and you are very balanced to be able to empathize in spite of the poor behavior of the other person. Kudos to you.
Like you I do empathize with others.... It sounds awful to me to break a leg skiing and my thinking would be... the crutches, the pain, the inconvenience....

You can have empathy, but still wonder if his accident was pay back for his mean ways.

Some people are indifferent to the plight of others. They are cold and unfeeling. You are the better person for being able to feel sympathy for this man.

I think they laughed as they believe no seroius harm has been done but when you heard the story you thought of the consequences of breaking a leg and how it may affect him.

Oh my yes......people lack empathy in a big way. I'm glad you are not one of them! Making you balanced....I don't know - that's a whole bunch of things. But it does make you a more compassionate and caring person!

I lack any form of empathy whatsoever, I am a bad person. Try it, it's great.
