Not your quote, no, it is Freud's. He also suggests that the answer to letting go of our memories, and thus be HAPPY, is to REMEMBER them!
Now, that's deep!

For some it is will not and that is a maturity issue.
In fact I tend to think it is the rare person who is constitutionally incapable of "letting go." These are persons who may have a chemical imbalance... Most often it is the old saw of grudge and resentments, over-inflated ego, and childish behavior.
The unhappy person is usually a person who is just throwing a life long temper tantrum.
This of course does exclude those who are in a present moment experiencing an extreme trauma... grief... disaster, illness etc.

Unhappy is a person who gave up life and lose his last hope, this person is pathetic because he is afraid to claim what he wants, he is afraid to fight for the best. Sometimes the most unhappy person is the happiest because even when he is at the bottom he never stops to look the sky.

Memories come in all forms, not just unhappy or completely uplifting. Letting go of all your memories would be stupid because they each have played a role in getting to where you are today.
