Well the repairing the Pistons is called re-ringing or replacing the piston. This is a pretty intense overhaul and care needs to be given. If the engine has high mileage this sealing up of the rings can cause the valve guides to start leaking and also will put more stress on older connecting rod bearings and crank bearings. Not to say this has never been done by itself, I just don't recommend this type work to my customers. Since the bearings will be removed and the heads off you might as well spend the little bit more and get the whole engine rebuilt. Which it sounds, by the price this is what is being done.

What's wrong with the pistons? If there is too much clearance between the lower piston shirt and the cylinder wall, no repair can be done. The block will need to be bored for the next larger sized pistons.

Some car manufacturers to day offer pistons that are over sized .003, .004, .005. In that case the cylinders only need to be honed to obtain the correct clearance. Hopefully you have engine shops that have a Sunnen honing machine. Such machines are extremely accurate and can provide the correct cylinder wall finish that the piston ring manufacturer calls for.

a 5 year old vehicle should not need this type of repair unless it's been overheated and the rings have gone plastic and or have become stuck in the groves. resulting in very little compression. check valve clearances peform a compression test and a cylinder leakage test to confirm what faults are present. then decide on what action to take.
