This is an extremely complex subject and one that can't be answered in one go.

There are many reasons a woman will stay with a man who hits her, as there are many reasons why a man will hit a woman.

I have a very good friend who was in an abusive relationship for many years, until she walked out - which was the hardest things to do. She was subjected to 5 years of subtle verbal abuse before he even laid a hand on her. If a person wears away at your self esteem long enough, you will take it, you start to believe that you are unworthy of love and that this is all you deserve.

When he started hitting her, he would apologise straight after, cry and say he loved her. She believed him and every time would take him back. She had a son to him, but when he hit the son - she walked. She lived in a woman's refuge for 6 months - she had no money (he took care of all of that) but she started to rebuild her life, slowly.

Please do not judge women who stay in abuse relationships. They need understanding and help to see that they are worthy of love.

The reason why woman stay with an abuser is because he emotionally abuses them as well as physically... he professes love, yet treats her badly... every situation is different, but if children are involved that can prevent her from leaving, also if she is dependent on him financially, and he has prevented her from gaining any skills it can be very scary trying to leave on her own. Often image is a factor... if the couple has a good standing in the community then leaving could change her whole reality, and even career prospects.

I personally would never ever stay with a guy who even hit me once... my mom and dad have been together for 33 years and he has never ever had to even raise his hand to her.... it is NEVER necessary in any circumstance. However even smart wonderful women can fall for an abuser, it depends on their past and what relationships in their childhood/teens they have to model their own relationships on.

Basically if emotional abuse is in the picture and the abuse is physical too... then that woman needs a big support from family and friends to get out of the relationship... but even if their are no family etc around there are support groups and organisations that can help!

There are a lot of reasons why people stay with abusive partners.

If you know someone in a situation like this be a friend offer advice if asked for, do not tell someone to get out of an abusive relationship.

This can cause more problems, and do not judge someone for being in an abusive relationship, you do not know their circumstances.

I think for a few reasons. Often in this situation, not only is the guy violent, but he is also mentally abusive to the point where his partner will have no confidence or self-esteem left. She then blames herself for his outbursts, thinking she must have provoked them, and does her best to get his forgiveness.

It turns into a viscious circle - she thinks she can change him, or change herself, and feels that she cannot live without him, hence she stays with him and puts up with the same abuse over and over.

She may also feel ashamed, and not want to admit to friends or family what is going on.

I feel so sorry for anyone in this situation, but there is always help out there for them.

A total dependency on the male, unfortunately this is pretty common. If a man ever hit me though I would castrate the punk

I wish that I could answer that, as I have had friends who were in abusive relationships. I think it is the attention they crave. While negative, it is still attention. Same thing as a child. If the child does not get the attention she or he needs, then he or she will act up to get in trouble. Getting in trouble means attention, even if it is negative. I hate to compare women to children, but in this case, I feel that it fits. Then the woman has become so used to that behavior, it's all she knows, and thinks it's normal.

I really think that some people go through life as a victim, a blamer. "There's no use in trying to improve because my pre-determined destiny will just suck me back in to a black hole of despair". It's quite sad really. They are basically co- conspirators. "Wishing for the things they fear in order to prove they're right. We humans have quite weird ways of thinking and living. Who's hoarding all the handbooks?
