as an Englishman, it always amazes me, that Americans seem frightened to laugh or have fun. They are so serious in every aspect, that i suspect the government has threatened to "remove them from the equation"is they chuckle.

Thats odd as an irish man i think english people are afraid to laugh. But then again ive only been there 3 times for a few days, and most of the english in ireland are a bit rude, some of em are a great laugh though. Maybe its just cos they are in a differant country.

Funny you say that as most English people come across as extremely serious- even dire to me. They definitely complain a lot more than what I'm used to and that's the main thing I've noticed about them. They keep saying they have a strong appreciation of comedy and what not but hardly any of them seem to follow through from what I've seen. I suspect it's just a different sense of humour. In the U.S. funny is like Chris Rock- don't ask me what the British think is funny but I suppose it's covered under so many layers of irony and sarcasm. Has nothing to do with our govt.- that's what we laugh about most.

I laugh at the Simpsons if that helps. But I'm not a yank, so I don't count.

The english are stuffy though and abit aloof/dour. Untill the weather turns lovely like now. Then its all mad dogs.

Have you watched recent American comedy programmes? Daily Show with Jon Stewart? Or have you not got digital on your TV? Of course Americans laugh. Everyone does.

Your question is, well, laughable.

Also, the people who answer questions on this website are not necessarily representative of the total population. Take any range of answers you get with a pinch of salt.

You pulled a lot of them in didn't you??

You must keep in mind that UK is much smaller country therefore seemingly having many pubs. Enough for oneself both inside and outside of them as well to have a good laugh. Where as Americans have more pubs/bars per ratio within and around the cities/neighbourhoods - thereby some can enjoy a good chuckle while downing tallies (or not), and others become anal while having drink (or sober).

No not at all. I laugh all the time. I have fun here on this site cracking wise. Camon over I have the whole series of Fawty Towers. Funniest T.V. show ever. I 'll show you how to laugh your heiny off.

Additional ; Your question made me think about the late, great Dudly Moore. Many of us Yanks do not know he was part of a wonderful comedy team that made me laugh till my and your sides hurt. I miss him.

You serious? Americans get a kick of out things like Retardation, incest, and a whole other slew of sexual jokes about their mothers, father, sisters. Hell, the appearance of other cultures makes us laugh. Shutup with this conspiracy "American government is a dictatorship" mumbo jumbo.
