When I visited H.K there was this atmosphere of formality and from some (in particular - chinese) people you could sense a distancing like they dont want to help you out. Hong Kong is like an international business centre and yet its people are so.. selective. Why are these people like that? Is it just racist behaviour due to the values they were brought up with?

actually it's true that there are good and bad but it's extremely rude when people say 'me no english' and then continue talking quite fluently in english just as one turns away.

Chinese people have had a very closeted upbringing with the communist regime. They can be surprisingly racist too. The British-Chinese are a bit better though.

there are always nice people or uptight, rude people in all the countries.

i can assure u that those people whom u met in hong kong they are helpful. but the thing is that they are very afraid of talking in English. they are kinda shy to talk in english, so most of time they pretend they can't see u nor hear u.. this may make u feel distant.....

My parents are from Hong Kong. When I went there there were some rude people and some were polite and were glad to help out. Therefore you should not generalize.
