The ping command sends packets and waits for a response, as well as returning info about how long it takes the packet(s) to travel. Some computers or firewalls have ping blocked. Try the following command:

ping www.yahoo.com

Ping is a command line way to test the functionality of your internet/network connection.

Open Command prompt the type ping www.terra.es or any other web address and you will get a report telling you how long it took the site to respond. Some web sites do not respond to ping commands, so don't be surprised if you do not get a response

You run it from a command prompt on most systems. In windows click start - run - command then in the black box that opens run ping yahoo.com (or an ip or what url you want to check)

The result will tell you if you have a connection to the server and what the delays and timings are getting to it.

If some time outs occur you have a network issue. It is mainly a tool for network diagnositcs.

Windows OS: Start > Run... > CMD >

ping google.com

Returns time to send / receive 4 data packets from a server. If it's online packets return, if not the request times out.

In XP, go to Start > Run and type cmd and the DOS window will open.

Then, type: ping www.yahoo.com as an example, and you will see a list of response times. Smaller is better.
