Examination is not the determining factor but it is the stepping stone. It is the attitude with which you face an examination which really matter and not the knowledge you hold. One may be excellent in his studies but his attitude makes a lot of difference to face the examination. So any examination in life if faced with right attitude brings good results. To give undue credence to any particular examination is not the correct way of right attitude.

yes. Exams are higher education's way of pigeon holing people. This is done so the educator doesn't have to actually interact with the student. Consider that with his disability Beethoven could not have gotten into music school at any university in today's world.

Upon graduation the stigma continues and you will find that employers use grades and test scores to exclude individuals. This is done no matter what the test score might have reveled. If you are black, female, over 40, Hispanic or have any other "undesirable" characteristics, you will find that a test somewhere along the way indicated that you were not qualified for a position.

But why gripe? its always been that way.

exams: yes unfortunatly they are becoming very important.

But the alternatives that occur often are pretty good still. Say you don't get in to Harvard or abc, often you can have a good experience at xyz.

This might mean later in life you are on the B team and not the A team. but things can still be good.

Luckily job pressure is not as fierce in the USA as it is in say Japan. (yet)
