Good question. After the lobbyists and political powers that be decide who they want to run the government we are given a choice; not for what we really want, not that we believe anything they say, not that we aren't fed up with their childishness, paying taxes for them to acquire millions over a lifetime and then listening to them criticizing the 'rich' who earn it honestly and aren't taking our taxes.
Then and only then are we given a choice. Take for example our new Congress. Morre evident than ever that they had no plan and have no idea how to resolve anything.

even thuogh people are disinterested, it at leasts puts politicians in the spot light so they have to outline their agendas. its essentially the basic safegaurd against tyranny: make the masters bow to the slaves in a way. they may rule us, but we can choose who rules us
