Good question. After the lobbyists and political powers that be decide who they want to run the government we are given a choice; not for what we really want, not that we believe anything they say, not that we aren't fed up with their childishness, paying taxes for them to acquire millions over a lifetime and then listening to them criticizing the 'rich' who earn it honestly and aren't taking our taxes.

Then and only then are we given a choice. Take for example our new Congress. Morre evident than ever that they had no plan and have no idea how to resolve anything.
