There's one major distinction between an intranet and the Internet: The Internet is an open, public space, while an intranet is designed to be a private space.
An intranet may be accessible from the Internet, but as a rule it's protected by a password and accessible only to employees or other authorized users.
From within a company, an intranet server may respond much more quickly than a typical Web site. This is because the public Internet is at the mercy of traffic spikes, server breakdowns and other problems that may slow the network. Within a company, however, users have much more bandwidth and network hardware may be more reliable. This makes it easier to serve high-bandwidth content, such as audio and video, over an intranet.

The Internet is the worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.
An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees. Sometimes the term refers only to the most visible service, the internal website. The same concepts and technologies of the Internet such as clients and servers running on the Internet protocol suite are used to build an intranet. HTTP and other Internet protocols are commonly used as well, especially FTP and e-mail. There is often an attempt to use Internet technologies to provide new interfaces with corporate 'legacy' data and information systems.

Here's a way to remember the difference between the two:
INTER = Between
INTRA = Within
Internet is a connection between networks; whereas intranet is a connection within a network, i.e., a workplace computers use their 'intranet' , a network system within their company.

Internet versus intranet design. Most Web sites are designed to be viewed by audiences inside an organization and are often not visible to the larger World ...Although these intranet sites employ the same technology as sites designed for the larger Web audience, their design and content should reflect the different motivations of intranet users.

Internet will connect you to the world wide web while intranet will connect your PC to your internal network or LAN (local area network). That means all the PCs that share the same internet connection as the one you are using.
