If you're just writing a simple ajax script with no php or other scripting language just css and javascript would you still need a webserver for it to run correctly like Apache?

There's a few conflicting answers (it looks conflicting if you don't read carefully). So, you do need a webserver. AJAX is about communication with the server, without reloading a webpage. By definition, a server is required. If it's just CSS and Javascript, it is *not* AJAX.

The server doesn't need to be Apache though. Whatever webserver you use just needs to support the form of communication in AJAX.

The whole point of Ajax is that it fetches new data from the server, so yes, you need a webserver. It doesn't need to be Apache though.

No, you don't need apache, you don't need iis, you don't need a general purpose server!

You can do ajax talking to a little program that just handles 2 different types of requests, the html page, and the ajax request.

it's one way of writing embedded systems on tiny systems.

But if you hang out with other geeks, you better have a good reason! because everybody uses apache, and it's free! and Microsoft IIS is a joke!

NO.
But when u will run it without a webserver, your browser will restrict the JavaScript to work. And you will have to allow it manually. And then the simple Ajax will work.

Nope. Any server will do. AJAX is just JavaScript and XML after all, so there's nothing fancy the server needs to do apart from hosting the files.
