I woke up this morning with a bloody spot on the outside corner of my eye. My husband said its just a popped blood vessel. How did this happen? And is there anything that will help it go away?

Straining of any kind can cause this, and you may not of even realized that you were doing it. It can happen sometimes just going to the bathroom, I know that sounds gross, but it's true.
It is called a subconjunctival hemorage, sounds much worse than it is. It's basically a bruise and it will got through the same healing stages as one. It will most likely get bigger, and darker, eventually turning yellow and then will go away. It could take a few days. There really is no way to rush the healing either, that I'm aware of anyway.

Usually this happens after a sneeze, but not always. There is not much you can do about it, and it will usually clear itself in a few weeks, with no lasting effects
