I think that jmwillix maybe right. I've seen this happen before. It is either a bad thermostat or it has been installed the wrong way.

Well was it overheating before the thermostat or just after? Subaru has a 2 stage thermostat that opens a little to warm engine before completly opening, this reduces a cold shock to the aluminum engine. Also I dont think it can fit in upside down due to the shape of the housing.
There is also the possibility of there being a air pocket in the cooling system. There is a bleeder screw on top of the radiator on the passenger side. You will noy get all the air out without opening that. With the engine off and cold, open the radiator cap and take out bleeder screw.then fill radiator thru the cap until coolant comes out of bleeder, then put bleeder back in and cap on.
Finally, those motors where known for headgaskets at higher mileage.Around 120k.It is not a cheap fix and if you do it,send the heads out to be done at a machine shop. The valves will get carboned up and the valve seats will not seal. The extra money will be worth it.Luckily the 1996 had hydraulic valve adjusters, unlike the 97 and up to 99 2.5 motors that had shims to adjust the valves.
Good luck and dont hesitate to ask for more info. Mike

Check to make sure the thermostat isn't upside down, that will cause the coolant to stay in the engine and block flow to the radiator for cooling.

Yeah, there could be a lot of causes. It could be that your thermostat is bad, put it the wrong way, or it might even be for the wrong temp. There might also be a hose kink, but since your system was flushed, I would doubt that's the case.

Not sure without looking, but it sounds like blown head gasket letting exhaust into water jacket. This will cause over heating very fast.

Sounds like one of your hoses has collapsed from the inside, restricting the water flow.

If it's the DOHC 2.5 then dig a $2,500 hole and bury it.
