I don't think it's actually poverty that increases gang violence. Gangs are spurred on by hatred weather they are poor or not. So you can't really factor in poverty as the source that increases the violence. I think it's more hatred and greed and drugs. Poverty is a small portion maybe of what causes gang warfare.
Gangs kill over territory, what one gang does to another gang and so on.

Most gangs are essentially run like businesses, only they deal in black market goods.

People who are living in poverty tend to be more likely to engage in black-market activity --- there's more risk, but a higher reward if one can pull it off.

because people with nothing have got nothing to lose.. plus poverty leads to desperation.. desperation leads to crime.. crime leads to violence..

violence leads to anger.. anger leads to hate.. hate leads to suffering.. etc...
