When you know that they have You and The business best interests in mind, and not themselves. When they give whats due to whoever its due to , rather than playing favorites. In other words giving everyone an equal opportunity in the business to express ideas and promote growth.

That means your manager was once where you are now.
A good manager is one who does not forget that fact.
A manager who tries to help you improve in your job instead of placing obstacles that may cause you to fail is a person to be respected.

when he/she does what they say. a wishy washy person with no spine deserves no respect (had several managers like this) they let the secretary run the office and they did whatever was pleasing to the person they were talking to

I believe it 's culture specific, different cultures have different expectations on what a good boss must be :
where I live he is sorta of a father figure - he must take care of you well and you must behave as a good child.
Maybe you could specify what culture you are coming from...

If they have a backbone, is not above getting their hands dirty. Someone easy to talk to. Will back you up when you're right. A good listener, etc
