The correct name of the country is The Netherlands.
Holland is a region of the Netherlands on the country's western coast, split into two provinces Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland. To refer to the Netherlands as Holland is incorrect as it does not comprise the other 10 provinces.

Holland used to be 1 of the 7 countrys that later made the Netherlands. In those days Holland was the center of trading and had by far the highest population (and still does).
In 1581 the united 7 netherlands was founded. In those days Amsterdam was the center of the world. That ended in 1794 with an invation of the french. and the republic was called bataavse republiek. In 1806 It became the kingdom of holland. In 1813 the north was libirated from Napoleon bonaparte and became the kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1815 the congres of wien declared also the south part of the kingdom of the netherlands. In 1830 the south seperated again and are now known as the kingdom of Belgium.
Now Holland is two provinces North and south holland wich is part of the Netherlands (lowlands? Thats why this name is plural Its like the united states.

The Netherlands is the official name. Holland is an easy name for foreigners. We have 12 provinces, one of them is south Holland were Rotterdam lies, and one of them is North Holland were Amsterdam lies.
I think because that area was the economic center were the ships were leaving to sail around the world ages ago, people call it Holland.
It's a bit the same like calling Great Britain, England.

the netherlands got two provinces called Noord (north) Holland and Zuid (south) Holland. Both are reclaimed land from the sea. Because its beneath sea level we called them holland what stands for low land / reclaimed land. Like other people said before its not our official country name but the Dutch became famous because of this extreme water engineering. Dutch people use the name Holland only during international football matches at the world and european cup.
