In Down at the Tube Station at Midnight Weller sings "I put in a coin and pulled out a plum behind me". Did London Underground have vending machines selling plums in the 70's and why would you operate one standing backwards?

Reverse Plum vending machines were all the rage in 70's London but I used to enjoy the smaller and easier to operate the upside down strawberry versions

hmmm - perhaps the lyrics to the song are as 'cryptic' as those in Cool for Cats.

I'd forgotten all about the Jam, till they were mentioned on Coronation Street last night. I do like a lot of Wellers stuff, but not enough to buy it or listen to it repeatedly.
