If an economic activity generates sales revenues in excess of the cost of inputs it consumes and yields surplus distributable revenues to pay off wages/salaries, interest on loans used, rent on land and buildings and a positive return/ profit on investnent made in that economic activity, then that economic activity contributes to national income. If over the years, this surplus revenues grows, then that economic activity also contributes to the growth of national income or economic growth. If Realty shows meet the above tests, as it certainly does in most cases, then Reality shows do contribute to national income and economic growth. One may think that Realty shows are useless wastage of time and national resources, but economically these shows do contribute to national and economic grwth. Cigarettes kill but the cigratte industry contribute to national income and growth. So do fashion shows, Bollywood fims, police services, defence services, churches, schools. Human beings have different needs including the need for entertainment. Commercially viable activities to meet such needs including the need to get entertainment contribute to national income and economic growth.
