After the engine is warm, it occasionally will start to have hard upshifts accompanied with a whining noise. IF I shut the car off and restart it then it's usually OK. This is entirely random, may happen two days in a row for not for a week. 95K miles, trans was already replaced once at 30K. Never towed with this vehicle. 95% highway driving.

I own a transmisson shop, and I think the problem may be a broken accumulator spring. It can also be a cable that runs from the throttle arm to the transmission out of adjustment or broke. Not knowing what transmission you have, I must cover general causes. The throttle position sensor can be bad, making the computer think you are pushing the throttle harder than what you really are. A whinning noise is usually a transmission that has a dirty, loose, or leaking tube going to the filter. It can also be caused by a bad pump, or line pressure going too high. I would vote for the line pressure going too high. There is some stuff on the market called "Lubegard" that you can get from a parts store that may fix the problem. A sticking valve can cause the line pressure to go too high before it over takes the spring tension in the valve due to a sticking valve. Put a bottle of the lubegard in the transmission, and if that doesn't resolve the problem, change the fluid & filter, and add the lubegard. You might want to have the codes pulled to see what (if anything) is there, to rule out an electronic problem. A bad throttle position sensor may, or may not show up, but still be bad. Does the engine sometimes change RPM's on its own? If so, then suspect the throttle position sensor to be the culprit. If you do this, and still can't find the problem, you will have to have it put on a computer that can do snap shot diagnostics. It takes a picture of the parameters when the problem takes place. Sometimes this is the only way to find the problem.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

PC control solenoids are prone to failure on early model 4T65-E transmissions.its usually a intermittent shift concern to do with harsh shifts. The whining noise might be related to the higher pressure or mabe air being drawn in around filter neck. I may add this solenoid replacement is a 6 hr job.
