Are birds and nests in the home a danger to the people?

All the openings to the attic should be covered with wire mesh to prevent birds from entering, yet allow hot air to escape. These need to be repaired. Otherwise you will have an accumulation of bird feces, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. Your health will suffer, not to mention stains in the ceiling.

Four feet? Take it to your local museum for display.

If you have an exterior access to your attic that a bird that requires a 4' nest can get through you better start by fixing your house ! a hole that size would let so much heat out that your heating bill must be crazy! Fix The Holes in your house ;
Quit wasting energy and let the birds go back to the wild where they belong !
JESUS CHRIST ! FOUR FOOT !??? ACROSS ?
STAY OUT OF THE DAM ATTIC!

Four foot nest? Sounds more like a pack rat nest. Maybe a large bird, as others have said. Either way, get the nest(s) out
of there, clean the area up, and by all means find the hole whatever it is has found to get in there. Close up the hole so it can't get back in. Any critter nesting in there will leave urine and feces, very unhealthy for you. Time's a - wastin' Get after it !!

I think you might have a hawk or another bird of prey nesting in your attic. You need to call the animal control and tell them. Or you could get rid of it yourself if there are no eggs. Then again, they might rebuild the nest. Call animal control. Birds of prey can be a danger.But, it's only because it's protecting the nest. Don't kill it, just relocate it.

Light the cooking fires and creep upon that bird in the dark with a hatchet. If anyone asks swear you killed it in self defense.
