Dueling Banjos:
Did you know this:
It’s been a half century since Arthur Smith and Don Reno picked out the melody to the best known banjo tune in history during a recording session in Charlotte, North Carolina. A dialogue between two five-strings, the original song was titled “Feudin’ Banjos”, but when the tune showed up in the popular movie “Deliverance” in 1973, it was credited to another writer! Arthur Smith sued and the record was set straight.
And:
Billy Redden (the boy with the banjo) did not know how to play banjo and was incapable of faking the playing sequence convincingly, and eventually another youngster was hidden behind his chair, with the sole task of providing the hand movements on the banjo.

In the scene, set at a rural gas station, character Drew Ballinger plays the instrumental 'Dueling Banjos' on his guitar with a mentally retarded hillbilly named Lonnie (implied as being an inbred albino in the novel, portrayed by Billy Redden in the film).
The boy eventually outplays Drew with his banjo.
The song won the 1974 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
The director, John Boorman's gold record for the "Dueling Banjos" hit single was later stolen from his house by the Dublin gangster Martin Cahill, a scene Boorman recreated in 'The General' (1998), his biographical film about Cahill.

I only remember the 'Dueling Banjos' song but thanks for the flash back. What a scary movie! I hike, canoe and camp and that film still creeps me out ... that and Blair Witch. Spooky. But "Too creative to be a Red-Neck." --a line from B.W. What? Have you seen some of that Folk Art?
Blue Grass Music has quite a following and it continues to grow.

You have already been answered a few time - it is the bit when the boy poays the banjo on the veranda with Burt Reynolds (I think). Then the same boy is on the bridge as they are canoeing away almost appealing for them not to go.
