Thomas Guides are the greatest things ever! Seriously, they should exist for every place on Earth.
I honestly have no clue why some women can't read maps. To be quite honest I assume it's simply because they don't want to bother. People go on about spatial relations but it's really not that hard.
I am a woman and have never, ever had a problem reading a map. I love MapQuest almost as much as Thomas Guides but TG offers much more detailed information.
I've also lived in LA and you just need a Thomas Guide in that area. I've met women outside LA who can't read maps but never one living in LA. When we need to actually bother how to figure out which is north and which is left we can do so just as well as the boys.
When the maps fail at least we know how to ask for directions ;-)

There is an excellent book called "Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps". It is technical but with a sense of humor. It boils down to brain wiring. Personally, I can read maps but have a poor sense of direction. Maps are my salvation.

it's hard for anyone to perform a task which they've never been taught to do.
I learned how to read a map working in a dispatch office at 22, and not a day before. No one ever gave me the opportunity before, and I had no necessity until that point.
I still can't change a tire, because I never was taught. But if you showed me right now, I could pick it up in no time.
If you don't like what you see, be the change you want to see in the world.

Bull. I've been studying maps ever since I was eight years old. I navigated several road trips, and was once able to memorize the capital of almost every country in the world. I'm the best at mapping in my geography class, and have briefly considered a career in cartography. AND I'M A WOMAN.

The male and female brains are wired differently. Males seem to do better with spacial relations (including map reading) than women (in general). That's why. All apologies to the 1:100 woman that can actually read a map well.

I must be an exception to the rule, because I'm really good at reading maps. :)
If someone tries to give me verbal directions I tend to get confused...having a map really helps.

A woman will tell you go down the road and turn right by the gas station. A man will tell you go two miles East on Route 2 and turn right. Women are more detailed with their directions.

I read maps very well, thank you. I also provide verbal directions better than my husband, so when we need to give directions to our home, he hands the phone to me.
