Almost the same as people in the west.
The Japanese started wearing western clothes around 1870.
I am not exactly sure what you mean by this question...

Take a look at The Last Samurai (Tom Cruise film).

Many people were beginning to wear Western style clothing, but others, women more often than men, continued to wear traditional kimono, hakama, geta, etc.

Even today, a few older folks in Japan can still be seen wearing traditional Japanese attire on a daily basis.
