I think it's because of a hope of becoming close and sharing life with someone else. Everything seems to be better when shared with someone else (movies, concerts, meals). At its best, marriage can BE this sharing of lives. An "us against the world" kind of thing.

When it goes bad it's one of the most painful things. I think that's mostly due to the close bond that was once forged (in most cases). It truly hurts to have that torn apart (or to tear it apart).

First of all, marriage is not a "cage."

Second, people who get all nervous at the mention of "marriage" have issues regarding committment that they're not admitting to.

If you love someone and want to spend your life with them, and you've taken the time to discuss all the important issues in your life (money, sex, career, children, religion, politics, etc.) then, marriage is a very minor detail.

I wouldn't buy a used car or a bag of herb from any person that has committment issues; they have to have one foot out the back door, so they can bail at the slightest hint of difficulty.

Because the grass is always greener on the other side! They see all these couples and wish they were married. After they get married they see all the singles and wish they were single. When I was a kid I couldn't wait to be a grown up, now I wish I was still a kid. It's kind of like that.
