I haev teh Mirena Coil fitted, but the little plastic strings have disappeared long time ago, so I am never quite sure if it is actually still there or not. I think it may have become dislodged or ineffective recently and I could be pregnant now. So I have 2 questions:
1) Can I do a normal pregnancy test or are the hormones in the Mirena going to give a false result ?
2) If I am pregnant with the Coil still active, what risks and side-effects are there for the baby, is it different for female / male babies ?

Cheers

1) The Mirena will not affect a pregnancy test.

2) There have been successful but of course accidental pregnancies with standard coils, the risk of having a miscarriage, infection or preterm labour will be increased if you were to fall pregnant with Mirena. Hormone effects are unlikely, because only minute amounts of progesterone are released, but the advice from the company is that the coil should be removed should pregnancy occur.

If you cannot feel the treads on your coil see your GP and an ultrasound will confirm if it is still in position.

To answer the first question yes you can take a normal pregnancy test and you will get a correct result.

Second question.........it is unlikely that you have gotten pregnant if it is still active.

Have your Dr do an ultrasound to see if it is still in place that is what my Dr does.

I would recommend getting in touch with your dr about this to see what they say and recommend.
